Corfu Spring

Today's picture from out back. A simple quick 'dry brush' filter with some shadowy leaves added to fill the empty shadow bottom centre. Add a few old olives and this is what homer would have seen if I had invited him to stay while researching the Odesy. The trees must be trembling now 'though, what with bankruptcy around the corner. Eh Rich?

  1. This is your idyllic view? ((sigh)) I love those pointy trees. What are they called? We don't have them in these parts.

  2. Hi Willow, had a little snoop around your manor, not so dusty, but have you posted pics of the surroundings? The pointy trees are poplars, and the others are fig, almond, citrus and olive mainly. Not many Greek islands are so green as Corfu, but mostly evergreen, and I miss the autumn colours and skeletal winter forms of deciduous trees. The weeds are overgrowing the cobbled path down to the valley now, and getting burned off already. I shall pic(ture)some flowers for you as a thank you for popping in. I love your '86 family group and will respond when my negatives come from England. Take care, Bob

  3. I first visited Corfu in 1978 and stayed in a very rustic Taverna in a very undeveloped Benitses. We hired scooters and used to cross the island (yes over those great big mountains on a scooter - two 18 year old girls)to go to the idyllic, unspoiled beaches at Aghios Geordios (sic) this picture reminds me of the views up in those mountains. The smell of citrus and olives - idyllic. We spent 6 weeks there - you didn't have gap years in the 70's just the 6 week break between school and university! I loved it, got windswept in Sidari - only taverna then was the Three Brothers, snorkelled at Kassiopi and marvelled at the women working on the salt flats at Kavos. Your blog is bringing back so many memories and making me wonder where I have mislaid the ensuing 30 years!!!!

  4. You did right Juliana in allowing the memories to remain such. At least I believe so. However Corfu is a wonderful place to survive or subsist, but when the internal pressures to achieve have been suitably subdued. I would like to suggest you look into Konitsa on the mainland which has not been developed seriously for tourism, and where I spent 9 strange years before coming here. There is nowhere in Greece like this - mountains, monasteries and deep limestone gorges. Pictures from here one day I hope. Thanks for dropping in.

  5. Konitsa - I did the halkidiki peninsula in the early 80's and climbed to the monastery eeyries- but believe that is now over-developed. Bit of a worry - i go discover somewhere and then it gets commercialised - think Thomas cook is spying on me? I had a 10 year love affair with the Greek islands and visited many of them - then came the babies... and greece never has got on top of its plumbing has it?

  7. Don't give up Juliana, Konitsa would not appear overdeveloped to you I feel sure, and the plumbing is almost entirely tolerable. The town has about 45 villages which can give a lot to the sympathetic explorer, overshadowed as they are by the villages of Zagoria not far away, just over Gamila in fact. I guided a few small groups around the area 10 years ago - one more little group would be nice............
